Welcome!  Our Mission Statement:  Believing that literacy is the foundation for a sustainable community, Washtenaw Literacy provides literacy support, free of charge, to adults through a network of trained tutors. It is our vision to eliminate illiteracy in Washtenaw County.  For over 40 years we have been empowering adults through improved literacy. Since our founding in 1971, we have served over 20,000 learners and trained and fully supported over 10,000 volunteer tutors.  Learn more.

  • Free TUTORING for ADULTS of ALL AGES!  Free, flexible tutoring in basic reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language (ESL): Learn more.
  • Learners: We have so many learning opportunities for you throughout the community. Take a look at some of our featured programs below:

    • Basic Literacy Learners: Attend a Basic Literacy Open Tutoring session today.

    • Register for a learning lab
      • Intensive ESL Learning Lab: This intensive English language class will provide a short-term opportunity for intermediate or advanced learners. Speaking and reading skills will be the focus of the class and learners will read and discuss dialogues or short chapters from different books. Participants must be able to consistently attend classes. Classes will run from May 30th - July 20th on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons near Plymouth and Green Roads.   • Washtenaw Literacy has been awarded two AmeriCorps VISTA positions by Michigan Non Profit Association for 2017-2018. Click here for posting and link to application. The VISTA positions will support our development of the Community Opportunity Center by providing outreach and onsite management. Additionally, our VISTAs will be working on projects to improve financial and workplace literacy for our learners. Interviews are conducted now! For more information, contact Alison. These full-time positions begin August 8 and are a great opportunity for someone just graduating college, changing careers, or newly retired.
