Welcome! Washtenaw Literacy's mission is to provide free literacy instruction customized to the needs of adults throughout Washtenaw County, utilizing a trained network of volunteer tutors. It is our vision to eliminate illiteracy in Washtenaw County. For over 40 years we have been empowering adults through improved literacy. Since our founding in 1971, we have served over 20,000 learners and trained and fully supported over 10,000 volunteer tutors. 

  • Free TUTORING for ADULTS of ALL AGES!  Free, flexible tutoring in basic reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language (ESL): Learn more.
  • ESL Assessment for Personal Tutoring Closed: Due to our large waitlist, we have closed the ESL assessment schedule from Saturday, June 14th through Monday, September 1st.  We will begin to schedule assessments for ESL learners looking for a personal tutor on Tuesday, Septemeber 2nd.  In the meantime, learners can attend any of our open ESL groups.  Please see the summer schedule below for a list of all our open ESL groups.
