Welcome!  Our Mission Statement:  Believing that literacy is the foundation for a sustainable community, Washtenaw Literacy provides literacy support, free of charge, to adults through a network of trained tutors. It is our vision to eliminate illiteracy in Washtenaw County.  For over 40 years we have been empowering adults through improved literacy. Since our founding in 1971, we have served over 20,000 learners and trained and fully supported over 10,000 volunteer tutors.  Learn more.

  • Winter Weather Closures: Washtenaw Literacy ESL open tutoring groups are cancelled when Ann Arbor Public Schools close for inclement weather. The Community Opportunity Center Computer lab will close when Ypsilanti Community Schools close for inclement weather.
  • Learning Labs: Learning Labs are small tutoring groups based on a specific topic. Learners must register in advance. Learning labs can be different each semester, so check this page often to see new options! Registration opens in December for winter learning labs, April for spring/summer learning labs, and August for fall learning labs. Our current learning labs are:
