Changing lives one word at a time

Welcome! Washtenaw Literacy's mission is to provide free literacy instruction customized to the needs of adults throughout Washtenaw County, utilizing a trained network of volunteer tutors. It is our vision to eliminate illiteracy in Washtenaw County. For over 40 years we have been empowering adults through improved literacy. Since our founding in 1971, we have served over 20,000 learners and trained and fully supported over 10,000 volunteer tutors.

  • NEW!  Personal Tutoring Model.  Starting June 1, we will provide a new model in personal tutoring.  Learners will be placed in one-on-one or clusters based on the outcome of assessment to optimize the impact of our tutoring.  The cluster model will be introduced to tutors through an information session.  Click here for more information.
  • Pathways to Literacy.  A new program is available for 16-24 year olds who need help with basic reading, writing or math.  Tutoring is free.  We can help you complete high school, attain a GED, or enter college.  Call our office today (734-879-1320) and ask for Jocelyn or click here for more information.

  • Free TUTORING for ADULTS of ALL AGES!  Free, flexible tutoring in basic reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language (ESL): Learn more

  • Group tutoring for ESL learners (English as a Second Language): Take a look at the new schedule for Spring/Summer 2013, effective May 1st: Spring Summer 2013 ESL Group Schedule.
