Wen’s Story

Wen was a dedicated scientific researcher in cardiology back in China. Seeking to further her career and explore new experiences, she moved to the US in 2022. Upon arriving, she faced two major challenges: navigating life in English and adjusting to the cultural differences.

Fortunately, a friend introduced her to the ESL program at Washtenaw Literacy. Through this program, she learned about American traditions such as Halloween, road trips, and football, as well as Ann Arbor’s local events. Whenever she encountered challenges in her daily life, she would bring them up in her ESL class and listen to the helpful advice from both tutors and fellow learners. The ESL program played a crucial role in helping her settle into Ann Arbor and make her transition smoother.

After a year of learning, Wen felt it was time to give back to the community that had supported her. She began attending regular Learner Team meetings, where she voiced suggestions and concerns from the perspective of a learner. Additionally, she volunteered as a site coordinator for the same group she once belonged to. From learner to coordinator and now a learner team member, this journey has deepened her empathy for other learners, and she’s always ready to offer a helping hand.

Volunteering at Washtenaw Literacy has also been an enriching experience for Wen. She has gained valuable skills in networking, learned to view situations from different perspectives, and made many wonderful friends. She believes that life is a journey, and with courage, you’re capable of achieving more than you ever imagined.
