An Evening of Music, Storytelling, and Support for Adult Literacy
ANN ARBOR, MI – October 13, 2025 – Washtenaw Literacy invites the community to a special evening of music in support of adult literacy, featuring acclaimed songwriter and longtime music booking agent Mike Green. The benefit concert will take place on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Gladwin Center, 4105 W. Liberty Road in Ann Arbor. Doors open with a reception at 7:00 PM, and the concert begins at 7:30 PM.
After a decades-long career booking some of the finest songwriters in the U.S. and Canada, Mike Green has turned his attention fully to his own songwriting and performing. Now also serving as a volunteer tutor with Washtenaw Literacy, Green brings both a passion for music and a commitment to literacy to the stage.
The concert will feature Green’s original songs, along with select works by some of his favorite fellow songwriters. The evening will also include a behind-the-scenes look at his creative process, exploring the connections between songwriting and storytelling.
“To my mind, a writer’s mind, Mike Green is a wry philosopher with a guitar, a perceptive student of the human condition and an upcoming writer worthy of deep listening,” said singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer. “His newest recording is a thoughtful, delightful and heart-opening collection.”
The evening will be emceed by Barbara Schmid, longtime volunteer and supporter of Washtenaw Literacy. She will engage Green in conversation about the craft of songwriting, the importance of literacy, and the power of words.
“I am so grateful to Mike and Barbara for sharing their talents with the community in support of Washtenaw Literacy,” said David Martineau, Executive Director of Washtenaw Literacy. “This concert is not only a chance to enjoy great music, but also a reminder of the power of creativity, storytelling, and community coming together to expand opportunities through literacy. We’re thankful to everyone who joins us in celebrating and advancing this vital work.”
All proceeds from the evening benefit Washtenaw Literacy, a nonprofit that provides free, personalized tutoring to adults across Washtenaw County. Nearly 40,000 adults in the county are estimated to experience low literacy, impacting their ability to fully participate in work, family, and community life. Washtenaw Literacy’s programs help learners set and achieve goals by building the reading, writing, math, and digital skills they need to succeed.
