Our Impact
For over 50 years, Washtenaw Literacy has helped adults change their lives through learning. Together with our dedicated volunteers, we celebrate the many ways tutoring has lifted our individual and collective well-being.
Growing Opportunities for All
We create ways for the community to teach and learn together, neighbor to neighbor, so that more people in Washtenaw County can thrive. Our model relies on our network of highly trained volunteer literacy tutors, who help thousands of people each year. Together, we have enriched our community for more than 50 years—improving health, well-being, economic stability, and opportunities, for generations.

Leadership in Literacy
As the first and only organization in the county to provide free adult literacy tutoring, we are proud to share our experience and expertise to advance literacy in the county, state, and beyond.
We do this by:
- Providing training to literacy organizations in nearby counties (including Jackson and Livingston) and throughout the state.
- Offering literacy sensitivity training for other nonprofits and businesses to help identify referral needs.
- Working with employers to support literacy skills among their employees.
- Founding the Coalition for Adult Literacy in Michigan (CALM) to unite literacy groups around the state, improve practices, and share resources.
- Collaborating with more than a dozen local youth literacy groups through the Literacy Coalition of Washtenaw County.
