Explore Life Roles with your Learner!

Our adult learners have a wide variety of relationships and responsibilities, and chances are that their goals are deeply tied to what they view as most important in their life and the roles they play in the lives of others. Equipped for the Future (EFF) is research that came out of the National Institute for Literacy.  It breaks down the skills needed to succeed as an adult in a variety of facets of life.  This includes identifying the purpose in learning.  See what role might be most relevant to learners you tutor.  Discuss with them.  Do they agree or disagree?  Do you agree or disagree?  What do they most need support with?  What do they most want to work on?

First, take a quick look at the Four Purposes for Learning and see what resonates.

The Worker Role Map takes a look at how someone performs necessary tasks in the workplace, but many of these ideas apply outside the workplace, too!

The Family Role Map explores what responsibilities a parent or family member has with their loved ones in a way that helps everyone to grow.

The Community Member Role Map provides a structure to examine the role someone plays in their community and their responsibilities as a citizen of society.
