Washtenaw Literacy’s

Emerald Awards

Celebrating Champions of Learning, Growth, & Connection

The Emerald Awards celebrate the visionary people and organizations who champion literacy and expand the opportunities that help Washtenaw County thrive. Established in 2026 to mark Washtenaw Literacy’s 55th Anniversary, these awards honor the community partners, volunteers, learners, and supporters whose leadership brings our mission to life.

In many cultures, emeralds symbolize knowledge and focus, growth and renewal, patience and compassion. These qualities perfectly capture the spirit of our adult learners as they strive toward their goals, as well as the dedicated tutors who partner with them. The Emerald Awards shine a light on those who help create a more connected, equitable, and literate community. Our honorees remind us that literacy is more than a skill—it is a pathway to belonging, opportunity, and collective well-being.

Washtenaw Literacy’s impact has always been fueled by the strength and creativity of our community. Each year, more than 1,000 adults work toward their goals alongside hundreds of volunteer tutors and dozens of partner organizations.

However, persistent challenges—such as economic instability, housing insecurity, and language barriers—continue to affect our neighbors. The Emerald Awards were created to acknowledge these hurdles while celebrating the people actively solving them. By recognizing leadership across all sectors, we elevate the innovative partnerships that build a more resilient Washtenaw County.

    The Emerald Awards serve to:

Honor Leadership: Recognizing bold actions that expand access to literacy and learning.

Acknowledge Holistic Impact: Celebrating work that advances equity, housing stability, health, and workforce pathways.

Celebrate Champions: Lifting up individuals whose initiatives reflect Washtenaw Literacy’s core values.

Inspire Collective Solutions: Demonstrating how collaboration across business, government, and philanthropy drives lasting change.

    Nominations Are Closed

Nominations are welcomed annually from community members, learners, tutors, staff, partners, and supporters. Honorees are selected based on their contributions to expanding opportunity, strengthening community belonging, and advancing the values central to Washtenaw Literacy’s mission.
