As we mark 40 years of championing literacy in Washtenaw County, it is fitting that we celebrate our successes, salute our learners and tutors, and recommit to the work that we still must do.

Please join us Thursday, June 9, 2011, at the Morris Lawrence Building on the campus of Washtenaw Community College.

The Annual Meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

At 6:00, we will serve refreshments and celebrate with cake.

At 7:00, we will honor learners and tutors

Randall Pinder is the keynote speaker for Appreciation Day. He will talk about how learners inspire learners.

Randy, who has been a tutor at Washtenaw Literacy, earned his doctorate at University of Michigan in English and Education. He has studied the effectiveness of literacy programs and what factors encourage the full participation and persistence of learners. He has found that learners who take part and persist in literacy programs are encouraged and supported by their social networks.

Following Randy’s presentation, outstanding learners will receive Scholar Awards. Both learners and tutors will share their stories of the challenges and triumphs on the journey to literacy. Their stories will inspire all of us to continue in the important work of improving literacy in our community.
