Washtenaw Literacy has been providing tutoring services through the Washtenaw County Adult Learning Collaborative in the past school year.  One of the unique offerings is College Now, a topical basic literacy group for adults who are seeking a GED and/or entrance to Washtenaw Community College.  Participants in this group were tested at the outset, and after every twenty hours of instruction.  The average reading level for learners beginning the program was 4th grade.  After the first twenty hours of instruction, the average reading level improved by 2.25 grade levels to the 6th grade level.  After another twenty hours of instruction, participants improved another 2.65 grade levels, ending the program with a grade level of 8.9.  Of the eleven participants, one completed his GED in ten weeks, two participants entered training through Michigan Works and seven are continuing with 1:1 tutoring through the summer.
