Tutor Training

Washtenaw Literacy provides comprehensive tutor training for all of our volunteer tutors:

  • One-on-One Tutor Training - All one-on-one tutors complete a required 15-hour training in Basic Literacy (BL) or English as a Second Language (ESL).  BL and ESL trainings are held concurrently. The BL training is based on the nationally recognized LITSTART training model.  The ESL training is based on the nationally recognized ProLiteracy training model.  Washtenaw Literacy trainers are certified in both models.  Trainings are held quarterly.  See upcoming One-on-One tutor training dates.

Tutor Training FAQ

Can I register for training online?

No, since we ask volunteers to attend an orientation first, training registration is not online.  You may register for an orientation online.  If you have attended a volunteer orientation, please call (734) 879-1320 to register for training.

What if I cannot attend every day of the one-on-one training?

We do offer make ups if needed.  Volunteers can miss a maximum of 6 hours of training.  However, if a volunteer will miss more than 3 hours, we recommend they wait until the next training as the make-ups can not recreate the group work and learning process of the training.

Why is the one-on-one training required and the group training recommended?

A one-on-one tutor works one-on-one with a learner from the first day of tutoring.  The 15-hour tutor training prepares a tutor to plan lessons around a learner's individual goals.  A group tutor works as a piece of a larger group.  During each group session, there are other tutors and a group coordinator on-site to offer support.  Each opportunity offers different, but rewarding, experiences.

Is there a cost for training?

There is a $25 cost for the one-on-one tutor training.  This covers the cost of the book and binder every trainee receives.  However, there are scholarships available for any attendee.  There is no charge for the BL or ESL group tutor training.
