Beyond reading and writing, literacy is the ability to communicate with others. Many adults contact Washtenaw Literacy to learn English. Their well-being, safety and their families’ futures depend on how well they understand, speak, read and write in English. An ESL one-on-one tutor assists an individual learner with English speaking, reading or writing skills to reach a variety of goals: studying in a U.S. school, communicating with one’s doctor, being able to make an emergency phone call. The one-on-one ESL tutor and learner meet weekly for two hours over 12 months or longer. To volunteer as a one-on-one ESL tutor, learn about our tutor training and register to attend a volunteer orientation. In the 15 hour tutor training, you will learn to craft lesson materials geared to your learner’s goals, strengths and skills. You can register for the tutor training at the orientation or afterward by calling (734) 879-1320 or e-mail
