Basic Literacy Tutoring Print E-mail

Every day adults contact Washtenaw Literacy for help with reading and writing. Though they struggle with reading and writing, adult learners have vast knowledge and life experience in other areas.

A Basic Literacy (BL) Personal Tutor helps an individual or cluster of learners improve their reading and writing skills to reach a variety of goals: reading the newspaper, obtaining employment, helping a child with homework.  The tutor and learner(s) meet weekly for 2 hours.  Personal tutors complete 15 hours of training where you will learn to craft goal-oriented lessons using authentic materials geared toward your learners' goals, strengths and skills.

A Basic Literacy Group tutor helps one individual learner in a class environment improve his or her reading and writing skills in preparation for a GED class, or as a drop-in BL learner.  BL group tutors are encouraged to attend a 3 hour training where you will learn about the structure of different groups, how to address your learner's goals, and practice teaching strategies.

To volunteer as a one-on-one or group Basic Literacy tutor, learn about our tutor training and register to attend an ABCs of Washtenaw Literacy information session.

You can register for one-on-one or group tutor training at the orientation or afterward by calling (734) 879-1320 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
