Basic Literacy Tutoring Print E-mail

Every day adults contact Washtenaw Literacy for help with reading and writing. Though they struggle with reading and writing, adult learners have vast knowledge and life experience in other areas.

A Basic Literacy (BL) one-on-one tutor helps an individual learner improve his or her reading and writing skills to reach a variety of goals: reading the newspaper, obtaining employment, helping a child with homework.  The one-on-one BL tutor and learner meet weekly for 2 hours.  One-on-one tutors will complete 15 hours of training where you will learn to craft lesson materials geared toward your learner's goals, strengths and skills.

A Basic Literacy Group tutor helps one individual learner in a class environment improve his or her reading and writing skills in preparation for a GED class, or as a drop-in BL learner.  BL group tutors are encouraged to attend a 3 hour training where you will learn about the structure of different groups, how to address your learner's goals, and practice teaching strategies.

To volunteer as a one-on-one or group Basic Literacy tutor, learn about our tutor training and register to attend a volunteer orientation.

You can register for one-on-one or group tutor training at the orientation or afterward by calling (734) 879-1320 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
