Washtenaw Literacy’s is welcoming new program coordinator Sylvia LeMay.  Sylvia brings extensive experience working with adults to improve reading, writing and math.

"Nearly 200 applicants applied for this position, and we are thrilled that we were able to identify a candidate with Sylvia's credentials and passion for literacy," said Executive Director Amy Goodman.

Sylvia hails from southern California and graduated from Cal State with a degree in speech pathology & audiology and a minor in English composition.  In Bakersfield, CA, she was a lead coordinator and supervising tutor for America Read/Counts through Americorps for seven years where she worked with reading, writing and math with adults.  During a clinical internship, she focused on diagnosis and treatment of disorders that impact hearing, comprehension, reading, writing or speech.  She also has experience working as a vision therapist to correct visual-motor deficiencies.  After moving to Michigan, she earned another degree from Eastern in Chemistry/Biology. 

“The pressing needs of literacy and education are personally compelling to me and I have explored the various capacities by which I could make a positive impact on the lives of others,” Sylvia stated.
